The Atanasoff-Berry Computer was built by Dr. John Vincent Atanasoff and graduate student Clifford Berry at Iowa State College during 1937-1942. It was successfully tested in 1942 and was the first completely electronic digital computing device. The ABC's characteristics included electronic computation, binary arithmetic, parallel processing, regenerative capacitor memory, and memory separation. Standard IBM punched cards were used as the primary user decimal input, and decimal output was via a front panel display.
